Established in 1960 by John West, the business was then sold to Tony Bass in 1984. It is now run by Tony’s sons Mark and Jon. Neal joined the board in 2014, bringing with him vast construction knowledge. Our team has grown to over 40 experts, mostly living locally to Weston-super-Mare.

We are a long-established member of the Federation of Master Builders, the industry marque of building quality, as well as SMAS, CHAS, Safe Contractor and Constructionline quality standard accreditation holders (SSIPs).
We are Gas Safe registered heating engineers and NICEIC-approved electrical contractors.
Like a family, we all work together to get you the best possible outcome. We work closely with your team, often as an extension of your organisation and make sure we involve everyone on site. When we need to bring in outside support, for example, asbestos experts, we turn to our trusted network of partners to help, giving you the peace of mind that your project will continue to run smoothly.

When you work with a contractor, we believe you should have access to the whole business, including our directors and highly skilled management team, who stop at nothing to sort out any problem. Our friendly and amenable approach aids communication and helps ensure the smooth running of your project.
We’re committed to working more sustainably to benefit our local community, our society and the planet.
One of our biggest achievements is generating 65% of our electricity from our on-site wind turbine and solar PV panels. Our 100% renewal energy supplier provides our remaining usage and supplies us with 1% green gas (ethically and sustainably sourced from grass cuttings) for our energy-efficient condensing boilers.
We’ve also invested in electric vehicles and an EV charging point at our HQ, buy materials locally where possible to minimise transport miles and recycle 93% of our waste.
Mark is a qualified Quantity Surveyor who took over the running of the company in 1998.
Jon is an experienced Quantity Surveyor with over 17 years experience.
Neal is a carpenter by trade. He joined the company in 2011 as Contracts Manager and became a Company Director in 2014.
The Management Team
Health and safety manager
Alec has an expert knowledge of UK criminal and civil Health and Safety law and the design and operation of safe systems of work. His skills include QMS, EMS, implementing management systems, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and BS 45001 and staff training and engagement.
FM contracts manager
Ian joined us in 2018 to manage Facilities Management contracts. Previously an electrician, Ian has worked in FM Services for over 15 years and is a Certified IWFM member.
Plumbing and Heating Contracts Manager
Bill has been with us here at John West for 35 years (after starting as an apprentice) and manages all aspects of plumbing and heating.
Electrical Contracts Manager
Andy has been with the business for 30 years and has over 35 years’ experience as a qualified electrician.
Mike worked as an estimator for 30 years before joining us as Quantity Surveyor. He has extensive knowledge and experience in design and build, main contracting, retail and commercial sectors of the construction industry.
Laura has worked in a number of roles over the past 20 years and is now our Office Manager.
